Five Things To Know Tuesday, July 24

1.  Today is Tuesday, July 24.  The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, a high temperature of 85 degrees, and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Tonight will be clear, with a low of 65 degrees.

2.  Contractors will remove asbestos from the last three sections of floor tile at Mary Morrisson Elementary late this week. The contractor is working 12 hour-days to finish, according to a briefing memo by Interim Superintendent Randall Collins. After the floor tile is done, workers will put on the finish and bring back in furniture and supplies, the memo said. The project is scheduled to be completed one week before school starts.

3.  The Town Council’s Committee of the Whole meets at 7 p.m. tonight and will hear an update on the Mystic Streetscape project and the parking agreement with the Mystic Arts Center. The council also has potential executive sessions to discuss the town manager’s annual evaluation and the Noank Fire District’s response to planning future use of the former Noank School.

4.  The school department is installing energy-efficient light fixtures and automatic switches at West Side Middle School as part of its effort to be more efficient, the briefing memo said. A Groton Utilities grant is covering half the cost of the project. Work will start in two weeks and be done by August 14, the memo said. 

5.  Groton Public Library is offering a if you need an activity for the kids. The theme today is owls, and the program is free and open to children of all ages.
