Five Things To Know Monday, April 23

 

1.  Today is Monday, April 23.  The National Weather Service predicts rain, a high temperature of 57 degrees and a breeze of 15 to 20 mph.  Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 45 degrees and a chance of showers after midnight.

2.  The Groton Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the school administration building and discuss topics including . Other topics include redistricting, asbestos removal work at Mary Morrisson Elementary and a district wide program aimed at improving student behavior.

3.  The chief of a submarine based at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton has been removed from his post for “alleged alcohol-related misconduct”, according to a news release by Submarine Group 2 Public Affairs.

Gregory Cordray, chief of the USS Annapolis, was relieved of his duties April 19 due to the alleged misconduct, which took place while he was on liberty overseas, the release said. Submarine Development Squadron 12 is investigating and Cordray has been temporarily assigned to the squadron in Groton, the release said.

4.  Groton will plant a sugar maple at at 1:30 p.m. on Friday as part of the town’s annual Arbor Day Celebration. The event will include a reading by the fourth grade classes of the Harry Behn poem “Trees” and presentation of the Tree City USA Award.

5.  The Groton Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition will hold a “Town Hall Meeting to Prevent Underage Drinking” at 6 p.m. on April 30 in Groton Public Library. The event will include free dinner from Paul’s Pasta, door prizes and the announcement of the 2012 GASP Coalition poster contest winner.
