Daily Five: The School Board, Donations and a Fundraiser for Cindy Grant

Five Things To Know Friday, April 5

1.  Today is Friday, April 5.  The National Weather Service predicts rain, mainly before noon, and a high temperature of 52 degrees. Tonight will be breezy and mostly clear with a low of 33 degrees.

2.  The Groton Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the Town Hall Annex and will discuss the latest on the search for a new superintendent. The board is also expected to vote on a resolution regarding funding of transportation for students attending magnet schools outside Groton. The transportation was originally cut from the budget.

3.  Groton’s Eighth Annual Fall Festival, one of the town’s biggest events, is scheduled for Oct. 12 and the Groton Business Association is looking for sponsors. The festival attracts thousands of people to Poquonnock Plains Park each year, and includes an arts and crafts show, entertainment, business displays, exhibits and food vendors.  To find out more about being a sponsor, go to the Groton Business Association website at grotonbiz.com or call the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce at (860) 572-9578.

4.  Thirteen Panera Bread bakery-cafes in Connecticut, including the café in Groton, donated $32,208 for the second half of 2012 to its Operation Dough-Nation partner, the Connecticut Sports Foundation, according to a news release. The donations are part of an effort to help cancer patients and their families with living expenses.

5.  Friends of Cindy Grant, an emergency dispatcher in Groton fighting multiple myeloma, have organized GRANT a Wish Night, a fundraiser on May 9 at Foxwoods High Stakes Bingo. Tickets are $15 for those age 18 and older who wish to attend. Cindy Grant needs a stem cell transplant and all ticket sales will be donated to the fund in her name.  For more information about the event, contact Glen Riffe at GRiffe@Groton-ct.gov.
