Daily Five: School Board To Hear Redistricting Update Today

Five Things To Know Monday, March 5

1.  Today is Monday, March 5.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, a high temperature of 38 degrees and a breeze of 13 to 16 mph. The low will drop to 18 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Board of Education meets at 5:30 p.m. today in the school administration building on Flanders Road, and will receive from Superintendent Paul Kadri. The Board will also discuss the school department's $1.4 million request for middle school consolidation, a possible new agreement with the Mystic Schooners baseball team, and data on the number of students suspended and expelled.

3.  Board members will meet jointly with the Town Council and state legislators at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to talk about issues at the state level affecting Groton. Expected topics include the school board's desire to have the Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School has been deemed out of compliance by the state, and the schools are facing redistricting to rectify this.

4.  The town will hold its first informational meeting Thursday on a potential blight ordinance. The planning and development office has been working with the Town Council . The meeting is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall Annex, and the public is encouraged to attend. Town staff will talk about the definition of blight, common violations and how ordinances are enforced.

5. Groton City Cabaret will hold at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the City of Groton Muncipal Building. Jack Madry, a jazz pianist, will play. The concert is free, and the Fitch High School Alcohol and Drug Free Party Committee will sell dessert and coffee. The concert information line is (860) 446-4129.
