Daily Five: Workout Event to Support Groton Boy, Other Cancer Patients

Five Things To Know Thursday, Jan. 24

 

1.  Today is Thursday, Jan. 24. The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, with a high temperature of 21 degrees and a wind chill as low as -8. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 12 degrees.

2.  Planet Fitness, including the Groton location at 1001 Poquonnock Road, will hold a Workout Against Cancer Event in 21 locations in Connecticut to support a Groton boy battling cancer and other cancer patients. The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday. Proceeds will help patients and their families with expenses including rent, car payments, utility payments, medical co-pays and transportation to and from the hospital.

3.  The school facilities task force will hold its first meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Town Hall annex. The idea behind the task force is to assemble a group of residents that can plan the next round of school construction. In June, the school board decided that the next phase of construction should focus on middle schools.

4.  Whyevernot is once again getting into the Valentine’s Day spirit. The store is inviting anyone who wants to make a Valentine to stop in and write a note on a paper heart. The hearts are hung in the store window.

The shop started the tradition of the window of hearts 25 years ago. Hearts start going in January and come down the week after Valentine’s Day. Whyevernot holds onto the hearts for about a month so contributors can pick them up for keepsakes. For those just passing through town, the store will mail them. The store is open Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and on Sundays, from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.

5.  Noank’s Movie Night for February will feature the courtroom drama "The Verdict", starring Paul Newman. The movie will be shown at 7 p.m. on Feb. 5 in the lower level of the Noank Firehouse. The movies are free and open to the public.
