Five Things To Know Today

Bitter Cold, Black History Month and The Superintendent

1.  Today is Tuesday, Feb. 8.  The National Weather Service is predicting rain and snow before 11 a.m., then scattered snow.  It'll be cloudy today with a high near 38 degrees, then the wind will  pick up and temperatures will plummet tonight. Winds may gust as high as 38 mph later today, and temperatures will fall to a low of  11 degrees tonight. With the wind, it will feel like -3 degrees.

2.  The Town Council Committee of the Whole will meet at 6 p.m. tonight, followed by a Town Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. The council is expected to take up several issues scheduled for the last meeting, which was canceled due to weather. Topics include the Thames Street reconstruction project, proposed new school construction and improvements to River Road in Mystic.

3.  Stacey Close, a history professor at Eastern Connecticut State University, will offer a lecture on civil rights and Connecticut from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the Groton Public Library. The event, being held in conjunction with National Black History Month, is free and open to the public.  For more information, click here.

4.  Superintendent Paul Kadri will be speak to parents from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Northeast Academy Elementary School. The superintendent is meeting with parent groups across Groton to spread the word about the proposed $133 million school construction program that would create two early childhood centers for children in grades pre-k to 1, build a new middle school for students in grades 7 and 8, and create elementary schools for students in grades 2 to 6.

5.  A Nurse-Managed Wellness Clinic will be offered from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. today in the medical room of the Groton Senior Center.  The event is sponsored by the Visiting Nurses Association of Southeastern Connecticut and the University of Connecticut School of Nursing. It offers services including health assessments, mobility activities and basic case management.
