Five Things To Know Today

The Education Budget, Proposed School Building Plan And Moms Talk

1.  Today is Wednesday, Feb. 16. The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, and a high near 38 degrees. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of about 32 degrees, and a wind between 9 and 13 mph.

2.  The Groton Town Council's Committee of the Whole will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. today with the Board of Education and members of Representative Town Meeting in the Town Hall Annex. Topics include the upcoming budget and the proposed school construction program, both of which could have significant impact on the town.  Groton Patch will have the story Thursday morning.

3. Schools Superintendent Paul Kadri will speak at 6 p.m. today  at the regularly scheduled Parent Teacher Organization meeting at West Side Middle School.  Kadri is expected to give an overview of the $133 million school construction proposal and take questions from parents.

4.  Speaking of education, we'll pose this question at 1 p.m. today during moms talk, our weekly discussion feature: Is this the right time to build new schools in Groton? The Town Council voted 6-3 last week to send the $133 million bond referendum to Representative Town Meeting, and it could be on the ballot in May. Please share your thoughts on this important issue when you have a moment.

5.  Groton Parks & Recreation is offering a Rowing & Sculling Clinic  from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Connecticut College Rowing Tank. Head Coach Ric Ricci is running the clinic, and rowers and Scullers will receive 2 hours of instruction. The deadline for registration is Monday, Feb. 21, and no on-site registrations will be taken.  On-line registration is being accepted at grotonrec.com or at the Recreation office in Noank.
