Five Things To Know Today

Snow, The Mystic Schooners And Submarines

1.  Today is Monday, Feb. 21. It's Presidents' Day, and Town Hall and the Groton Public Schools are closed. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Groton, predicting snow mainly before 2 p.m.  Forecasters expect accumulation of 2 to 4 inches, and a high near 33 degrees, with temperatures dropping to a low tonight of about 16 degrees.

2.  The name of the New England Collegiate Baseball League opening their season in Groton this spring will be The Mystic Schooners. Renovations to the baseball field at Fitch High School will be completed this spring, including lighting, a press  box, bleachers, improved dugouts and new fences. The season starts June 10 and ends with an away game on August 1.

3.  The Groton Public Library will show the classic Alfred Hitchcock movie North by Northwest from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday, as part of its Classic Cinema series. The movie is free and open to the public. For more information, see the event listing here.

4.  Governor Dannel Malloy has sent letters to the chairs and the ranking members of Congress' Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense to ask for full funding of two Virginia Class submarines slated to be built by Electric Boat. The 2011 Department of Defense budget included  $3.44 billion to build two subs per year, but a continuing resolution issued in the absence of a budget, provides only funding for one sub.

5.  This week in Moms Talk, we'll continue our discussion about the future of the Groton Public Schools. Our question for the live chat which begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, is: "Should Groton close one of its middle schools? If so, which one should it close?" Please let us know your thoughts. We'll also remind you in Wednesday's daily five.
