Five Things To Know Today

The Governor, Basketball And Burglaries From Boats

1.  Today is Tuesday, Feb. 22.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, with a high near 28 degrees.  Tonight will be clear, with a low around 14 degrees and a north wind between 7 and 10 mph.

2.  Gov. Dannel Malloy speaks at 8 a.m. today at a breakfast at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa in Groton, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut. Topics include the proposed budget and tourism funding.

3.  The Department of Human Services offers a Mother's Craft and Friendship Group from 9:30 a.m. until 11: a.m. today at the Human Services Building on Fort Hill Road. Mothers are welcome to bring their young children, and the program is free. For more information, see the event listing here.

4.  The Groton Basketball Association, a recreational league, has enrolled 270 children this season, according to a report by Jerry Lokken, manager of recreational services for the town. Staffing has become an issue as a number of employees have returned to college, but the recreation department is using professional referees, which has improved the quality and control during games, the report said.

5.  Police had a busy November, according to a Feb. 17 report to the Groton Town Council. The report said patrol and detective divisions worked on several burglaries from boats on dry docks, and several thousand dollars of electronics was stolen. An officer also took complaints of counterfeit bills turned in to Walmart, Kohl's and Taco Bell.
