Five Things To Know Today

Rain, School Construction And The Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department

1.  Today is Thursday, Feb. 24. The National Weather Service predicts increasing clouds today and a high near 38 degrees.  Rain is expected after midnight, with new rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

2.  The Representative Town Meeting's Education Committee holds a special meeting at 7 p.m. today in the school administrative office to discuss the proposed $133 million school construction program. The proposal is expected to be on the May ballot, but Representative Town Meeting must send it forward first.

3.  Groton Public Library offers "Preschool Stories With Miss Tracy" on Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., for children ages 3 and up. The program includes story time, a craft and free play. Siblings are welcome. For more information, see the event listing here.

4.  The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut will hold the State of Groton & Ledyard luncheon from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on March 30, at the Best Western Olympic Inn in Groton.  Invited speakers include Groton City Mayor Dennis Popp, Groton Town Manger Mark Oefinger and Groton Town Mayor James Streeter.

5.  The Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department in Groton will receive $115,267 in federal funding from the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency, Congressman Joe Courtney's office announced Wednesday. The grant will be used to purchase new protective gear and air bottles, his office said. The grant was provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, and can be used for training  and acquiring equipment and vehicles.
