Five Things To Know Today

Complaints About Utilities, The Probate Judge Election And The Edible Books Festival

1.  Today is Friday, April, 1. The National Weather Service forecasts rain, and a high temperature near 39 degrees.  The rain may continue tonight. Then it'll be partly cloudy, with a low of about 33 degrees.

2. The Department of Public Utility Control released its consumer scorecard on Thursday, which looks at the number of complaints about various utility companies. The scorecard showed Thames Valley Communications, which serves Groton, was among the companies with fewer complaints per 100,000 customers in 2010, and that Connecticut Light and Power was among the utilities with more complaints per 100,000 customers.

3.  A special election to fill the post of probate judge would cost $26,000 if it must be held in August, the Groton Town Council learned Thursday. If a primary is also needed, this would cost an additional $24,000. The council wants to wait until November for the election, but this is up to the secretary of state's office. Probate Court Administrator Paul J. Knierim sent a letter asking that a special election be held as soon as possible to find a replacement for Frederick Palm, judge of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Probate Court. Palm died on March 16.
