Five Things To Know Today

The Budget, Volunteer Month And The High School Debate Team

1.  Today is Tuesday, April 5. The National Weather Service predicts fog in the morning, then showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds. The high temperature will be 54 degrees. Rain is also expected tonight, with a low around 33 degrees.

2.  The Groton Town Council continues its discussion of the budget this evening, including a potential executive session to consider upcoming labor negotiations. The council is also expected to set the Representative Town Meeting date on the budget for Thursday, April 28 in the Groton Senior Center.

3.  In honor of National Volunteer Month, the Groton Public Library will offer an opportunity for students in grade six and up to help at the library and elsewhere in the community. The first meeting of the group "Volunteens" will be held at 4 p.m. today at the library, with a library "clean-up day" scheduled for April 19 to mark Earth Week. For more information, click here.

4.  The Fitch High School debate team will take on a controversial issue from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the high school band room.  The topic is whether stores should be allowed to sell drug paraphernalia. The program is open to the public.  To see the event listing, click here.

5.  Join us at 1 p.m. on Wednesday for Moms Talk, when we'll discuss the availability of day care in Groton. Do you think there is enough affordable child care available?  The local group Children First Groton recently identified this as a pressing need in the community.
