Five Things To Know Today

The School Budget Again, Health Programs for Seniors And "Snapshot Day"

1.  Today is Wednesday, April 13.  It'll be rainy and windy, with a high temperature near 51 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. There's also a chance of showers tonight, with a low of about 40 degrees.

2.  The Groton Town Council meets Thursday at 6 p.m. with the Board of Education to discuss the school spending plan, then on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. to discuss budgets for public safety and capital projects. The council may be ready to finalize its recommended budget for the coming fiscal year by April 19.

3.  On Tuesday, the council unanimously approved a grant application of $10,250 from Pfizer to create health programs for seniors that deal with issues such as preventing falls and managing chronic disease.  Money from the program would be designated for senior centers in Groton, East Lyme, and Waterford.

4.  Today is "snapshot" day for Connecticut libraries, where they collect information to capture the impact of local libraries in communities on a typical day. The event is sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association, Connecticut State Library, and Connecticut Library Consortium.  Groton Public Library is participating.

5.  The library is also hosting a "teen open mic night" at 7 p.m. today to celebrate National Library Week.  Teenagers are encouraged to bring their music, stories or poetry and perform in front of a live audience.
