Five Things To Know Today

Summer Food Program, Stop & Shop And Survival Training

1.  Today is Thursday, April, 14. It'll be partly sunny, with a high temperature near 59 degrees, and a low around 38 degrees tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

2.  Groton will continue with a program that provides meals to low-income children during the summer, the Town Council decided Tuesday.  The program was expanded last year to include a site at Washington Park, along with the former William Seely School, Claude Chester Elementary, Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School and West Side Middle School. The program served 5,600 breakfasts and 7,600 lunches to children last summer. It is paid for with federal money.

3.  The store manager of the Groton Super Stop & Shop gave $5,125 to Groton’s Department of Human Services on April 1 to help buy food for the agency’s food locker and keep it stocked. Customers and employees contributed donations.

4.  If you've ever wondered what's its like to go through a helicopter crash, Survival Systems USA, Inc, is holding a grand opening today to demonstrate their survival simulation equipment at their headquarters in Groton. Anyone may stop in and observe the training; the company can create rain, wind, lightening and fog. Demonstrations will run at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

5.  Feeling uninspired? The Groton Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a workshop called "The Passion Test" from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. today at William Seely School. The program is open to residents ages 16 and up.  For more information, click here.
