Five Things To Know Today

A Food Drive, John Silsby And Earth Day

1.  Today is Friday, April 22. It is Good Friday, a religious holiday celebrated mainly by Christians that recalls the crucifixion of Jesus. It will be cloudy today, with a high temperature near 50 degrees and a chance of rain tonight, according to the National Weather Service.  The low tonight will fall to about 38 degrees.

2.  The Groton Long Point Police Department is asking for donations for a food drive it will hold through May 18. All items, including personal care items like toothbrushes and school supplies, will be given to the Groton town food locker. Donations may be brought to the Groton Long Point Police Department, # 3 Atlantic Ave, at any time.  Groton Long Point Police Chief Larry Pagan is also offering to pick up donations on his own time. 3.  Groton Town Parks & Recreation Director John P. Silsby is retiring on June 30 after ten and a half years with the town department. Silsby, who recently turned 66, previously worked for 26 years as parks and recreation director for a community in western New York.

4. To celebrate Earth Day, Groton Youth Services is offering a program at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Groton Public Library. The program, called “Recycling is Magic,” includes a storytelling and magic performance, then offers children the chance to make a craft using recyclable materials. The event is free. 5.  The SouthEastern Connecticut Enterprise Region recently finalized a loan that will allow two doctors to buy the equipment they need to open a practice at 801 Poquonnock Road in Groton. Harold E. Phillips, Jr. and Kimberly A. Phillips plan to open the practice May 11. The practice will try to bridge the gap between alternative therapies and traditional medicine, according to a prepared statement.
