Five Things To Know Today

Groton City Mayor Dennis Popp, Two Hotels And The Prescription Drug Take Back Program

1.  Today is Monday, April 25.  The National Weather Service predicts showers, with thunderstorms after noon and a high temperature near 60 degrees. The low will fall to about 49 degrees tonight. 

2.  The Groton Town Council  meets at 6 p.m. today as a committee of the whole to discuss the budget. The council is expected to settle on a budget early this week and set a tax rate based on expected spending and revenue. Representative Town Meeting then holds its annual budget session beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Groton Senior Center.

3.  A retirement party will be held for outgoing Groton City Mayor Dennis Popp at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 13 at the Groton Inn and Suites. Popp is leaving the post after 12 years as city mayor. City Deputy Mayor Marian Galbraith is running unopposed for the seat in May.

4.  Two Mystic hotels were recently certified through Connecticut Green Lodging, a program that promotes energy conservation. The certification by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism recognizes businesses that take steps such as reducing water use, waste and using fewer toxic cleaning products. The Comfort Inn and Residence Inn By Marriott, both on Whitehall Avenue, received the certification this year.

5.  The Groton Senior Center will serve as a site for the National Prescription Drug Take Back Program on Saturday, April 30. The event provides a place for people to drop off their unused prescriptions or other medications they have accumulated over the years.
