Five Things To Know Today

Representative Town Meeting, Gas Prices And Tree USA

1.  Today is Thursday, April 28.  The National Weather Service predicts heavy rain, gusty wind and a chance of thunderstorms. The high temperature will reach 64 degrees, with the low of 50 degrees tonight.

2.  Representative Town Meeting convenes at 7 p.m. in the Groton Senior Center to begin discussing the budget for the coming fiscal year. The Groton Town Council on Tuesday approved a tentative tax rate of 19.6 mills for the coming fiscal year, an increase of 6.4 percent over the current year's mill rate.

3.  Congressman Joe Courtney will hold a press conference today at Hytone Farm in Coventry to discuss a plan aimed at reducing gas prices. Gas prices in Connecticut have risen more than .40 in the last month. Others expected to speak with Courtney include Gene Guilford, director of the Independent Connecticut Petroleum Association and Frank Gerlando, owner of eGen in Groton.

4.  Groton is among 19 communities in Connecticut designated as a member of Tree City USA in 2010.  The national designation is made by the Arbor Day Foundation in Nebraska and honors communities that demonstrate a commitment to protecting local forest. Branford and New Canaan were added to the list Wednesday. Groton has held the designation for 16 years.

5.  A benefit for "Sea-Legs" will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at Mystic Aquarium. Sea-Legs, which serves Eastern Connecticut, brings young cadets and their mentors aboard boats to teach them how to sail. For more information, click here.
