Five Things To Know Today

The Workers' Memorial, Health Awards At Electric Boat And The March for Babies

1.  Today is Friday, April 29.  After days of gray, it'll be mostly sunny, with a high temperature near 65 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 43 degrees. 

2.  A crowd gathered at 6 a.m. at the Memorial Monument in Washington Park Thursday to remember employees who have been injured, made ill or died on the job. The AFL-CIO Workers’ Memorial ceremony is held each year on April 28, the same day the Occupational Safety and Health Act was signed in 1971.

3.  Electric Boat announces the winners today of its health promotion program, which awards people who take steps such as  joining a stop smoking program, getting a physical, or getting basic health measures checked like blood pressure. The program gives out 149 prizes totaling $125,000, the largest of which is $7,500.

4.  Hundreds of people are expected to gather at Bluff Point Start Park on Saturday for the March of Dimes "March for Babies" walk, which raises money for programs such as prenatal wellness and family support for those with infants in intensive care. Registration starts at 9 a.m. The walk is at 10 a.m.

5.  The Gallery at Lighthouse in Groton will hold the opening of its 3rd Annual Student Show from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on May 6.  The event displays work from students at the Lighthouse voc-ed center, and includes refreshments and music.  Student work will be for sale.  Artists receive 70 percent of the sale proceeds and the gallery receives 30 percent.
