Five Things To Know Today

College Graduation, A Kids Safety Event And Representative Town Meeting

1.  Today is Friday, May 6. It'll be sunny, with a high temperature near 63 degrees, and a low of 49 degrees tonight, according to the National Weather Service. There may be some rain overnight.

2.  The University of Connecticut at Avery Point holds its graduation ceremony today at 4 p.m. for students who graduated in December 2010, and those who graduate this month and in August.  History instructor Dale Tuller will sing the alma mater.

3.  A Groton Kids Safety Event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the Groton Elks Lodge at 700 Shennecossett Road.  Groton City Police will do finger printing, children who bring bikes will receive free bike helmets and Life Star will land at noon and stay so the kids can look around and ask questions. The event will also include clowns, a moon walk, face painting and free food.

4.  Representative Town Meeting reconvenes at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Groton Senior Center to discuss the town budgets for human services, parks and recreation and the public library. The group takes on the education budget Wednesday, May 11.

5.  Groton City Mayor-elect Marian Galbraith will be sworn in Monday evening at the municipal building, along with the newly-elected City Council.  Voters elected newcomers Amy Moncy and Larry Gerrish to the council on May 2, and re-elected incumbent councilors Keith Hedrick, William Jervis, Celeste Duffy and David Hale.
