Five Things To Know Today

The Three Middle Schools, Grasso Tech Student Portfolios And A Family Fun Event

1.  Today is Tuesday, May 10.  It'll be sunny and breezy, with a high temperature near 60 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. There's a slight chance of showers in the morning and in the evening. The low temperature will drop to about 45 degrees tonight.

2.  Groton will not be able to fit 12 teams of middle school students into Cutler and West Side middle schools in the event Groton must consolidate, the superintendent said Monday night. Board of Education Chairman Brian Shirvell said he hopes the schools are spared substantial cuts so they can keep the set up of three middle schools for one more year. Representative Town Meeting takes up the education budget Wednesday.

3.  Students at Ella T. Grasso Southeastern Technical High School are holding a portfolio show on Wednesday, where seniors will display their graduation portfolios and discuss their work. Members of the community, colleges and businesses have been invited to attend the sessions from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.

4.  A free family event is planned from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Mystic & Noank Library. The event will include arts and crafts as well as a storyteller from the Connecticut College Storytelling Association. The Children First Groton Mystic/Noank/Groton Long Point Neighborhood Group is organizing the event and encouraging parents to attend and talk about what they'd like to see for children and families in the community.

5.  Chelsea Groton Bank recently elected of five new corporators: Louise Summa, director of human resources/labor relations at Three Rivers Community College; Margarett Jones, executive director of Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center; Abby Dolliver, superintendent of the Norwich Public Schools; Elizabeth Conway, from the office of legal counsel for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe; and Louis Allen, Jr., director of Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut. All were voted in April 28.
