Five Things To Know Today

The Military/Superintendent's Liaison Committee, "Hoofin For The Cure" And The Parade Of Pets.

1.  Today is Friday, May 13.  Yes, it's Friday the 13th, if you believe in such things. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature near 62 degrees, with a low of 47 degrees tonight.

2. The Military/Superintendent's Liaison Committee, made up of school superintendents including Groton’s Paul Kadri and military personnel, has been asked by the national group to organize a statewide conference on issues affecting military families in Connecticut.  Kadri said the group has been asked to invite "the 300 most influential decision makers" to the conference in the fall.

3.  The Mystic Valley Hunt Club will host a 5k walk-a-thon and road race called “Hoofin For The Cure” at 9 a.m. Saturday to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Walkers can follow the course alone, take the dog, or ride their horse.  The entry fee is $25. The purple ribbon symbol is meant to signify all types of cancer.  For more information, click here.

4.  The First Annual Bella Memorial Parade of Pets will be held at noon on Saturday, at , 99 Yacht Club Road, Mystic.  Organizers are asking for one can or bag of pet food as admission. The food will be donated to the Groton Animal Pantry, which helps struggling owners feed their pets.

5.  The Sandbox, an indoor beach sports facility in Mystic, is hosting a Coed 2s Beach Volleyball Tournament from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday.  Players of all ages and skill levels may participate. For more information, click here.
