Five Things To Know Today

The Board Of Education, David Winkler, Jr., And The Prescription Take Back Event

1.  Today is Monday, May 16.  The National Weather Service forecasts cloudy skies, drizzle and a high temperature near 63 degrees. Rain is also likely tonight. The low will be about 54 degrees.

2.  The Groton Board of Education holds a special meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex to discuss how to handle budget cuts made by Representative Town Meeting. The RTM on Wednesday approved a $72.6 million budget for the pubic schools, $2.2 million less than the school board asked for and $1.6 million less than the Groton Town Council approved. Superintendent Paul Kadri said the decision may force Groton to close a middle school or eliminate programs such as all-day kindergarten.

3.  David Winkler, Jr., who retired May 4 as chairman of the Copp Family Board of Overseers and the Groton Parks Foundation, will be recognized by the Town Council on Tuesday. Winkler is credited with helping develop the plan for the Copp Property, creating the Groton Parks Foundation, and creating the trail system and "Central Bark", Groton's dog park.

4.  Groton Town Police collected more than 50 pounds of unused and expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications during the National Prescription Take Back event last month. The Groton Senior Center hosted the event April 30 where residents could stop in and drop off their old prescriptions and medication.

5.  Mystic Aquarium’s Sea School Scholars will have a Skype-based lesson at 3:30 p.m. today from Daniel Fletcher, a University of California-Berkeley scientist. Sea School Scholars is an afterschool program that teaches 6- to 8-year-old children about nature at the aquarium. Fletcher was formerly a White House Fellow, among his achievements.
