Five Things To Know Today

The Fitch Parent Council, MADD And Buckling Your Seat Belt

1.  Today is Tuesday, May 24.  The National Weather Service predicts more rain. It'll be foggy in the early morning, then cloudy with showers, possible thunderstorms, and a high temperature near 73 degrees. The low will drop to about 59 degrees tonight.

2.  The Fitch Parent Council is hosting an informal "Parent to Parent" discussion at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the school library for parents and guardians of incoming freshman. Administrators will explain how the new class schedule works and parents will be on hand to answer questions. For more information, contact fitchparentcouncil@hotmail.com.

3.  Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Groton Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition will hold a free program at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Groton Public Library about talking to your children about alcohol. The program includes a 30-minute presentation and handbook similar to one created by Dr. Robert Turrisi, of Pennslyvania State University. Turrisi found that parents who talked to their college-age children about drinking reduced the number of behavioral problems associated with alcohol.

4.  The local substance abuse prevention coalition will also hold a press conference next week about what it describes as an "overwhelming presence" of tobacco products and advertising in Groton.  Speakers will include Robin Cox, Prevention Services Coordinator for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

5.  Make sure your seat belt is buckled if you head out, particularly on the next two Fridays. Along with the "click it or ticket" enforcement campaign, Groton Town Police will hold spot checks at various locations in town on May 27 and June 3 to make sure everyone is buckled up.  The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $92.
