Five Things To Know Today

Walmart, The Groton Library And The Red Cross

1.  Today is Friday, May 27.  The National Weather Service predicts fog in the morning, then cloudy skies that will gradually clear. The high temperature will be 74 degrees, then drop to a low of about 58 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Planning Commission has unanimously approved the site plan application by Walmart to expand the store on Gold Star Highway by almost 40,000 square feet, which would increase retail space by about one-third. When finished, the store would be 159,674 square feet, including a grocery section, fenced-in garden area and vestibule entryway.

3.  Groton library released the results of a survey done this spring that asked residents, among the questions, what services they'd like that the library doesn't have now. Fifty-five percent said they'd like a cafe' or coffee shop in the library, according to a report by the town manager. About 44 percent said notary services would be helpful. Other ideas included comfortable chairs, Saturday daytime movies and tax preparation services.

4.  The American Red Cross is still looking for volunteers for its shelter preparedness exercise at the Groton Senior Center on June 3. The goal of the exercise is to test the state's ability to handle a potential emergency by having volunteers stay overnight at shelters across the state. Dinner, children's activities and cots will be provided in Groton. Registration is required. Volunteers are asked to e-mail Sue Rochester Bolen at ctexercise4@ctredcross.org or call (860) 447-3249, extension 13.

5.  Mystic Aquarium admitted more than 18,000 people from nearby towns during the spring weekends it gave free admission to local residents through the “Your Town” program, according to a news release. “People thanked us profusely,” Guest Services Director Celinda Beaudreau said in a prepared statement. Many people said they had not been able to visit for years because of the economy or a job loss, she said.
