Five Things To Know Today

The Summer Solstice Art Show, Groton-New London Airport And Clipping Coupons

1. Today is Thursday, June 2.  It'll be sunny, with a nice breeze and a high temperature of 71 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The low temperature will fall to 48 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and Ledyard Safe Teens Coalition announced a marketing campaign Wednesday to encourage parents to be firm with their teenagers about not drinking alcohol. The campaign, called “Be the Wall,” includes posters, billboards and other marketing tools to send home that message. Groton coalition coordinator Michelle Hamilton said in a news release that she expects a safe prom and graduation season. But she added: “There is no such thing as safe teen drinking.”

3.  The Summer Solstice Art Show opens at 7 p.m. today in the Groton Public Library, with a reception for local artists. Refreshments will be served, and the exhibit will be on display through June if you'd like to stop and take a look.

4.  Transportation officials will hold their first public informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. on June 9 in the City of Groton council chambers to talk about possible improvements to the Groton-New London Airport. The goal of the evening is to present various options for improvement, then take questions and hear the public's thoughts. Options include a "do nothing" approach and full development of the airport.

5. Local coupon-clipping guru Treasure Philips will give a class on the basics of couping from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., on Saturday, June 11. There's a $20 fee for the class, but it offers to teach you how to cut your shopping bill in half every time you go to the store. To register, call the Groton Senior Center at (860) 441-6795.
