Five Things To Know Today

Panera Bread, Electric Boat And The Chelsea Groton Foundation

1.  Today is Monday, June 6. The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, with a slight chance of showers this afternoon and a high temperature of 73 degrees. The temperature will drop to 56 degrees tonight.

2.  Panera Bread plans to open in what was formerly Hollywood Video in the shopping plaza that houses Kohl's and Stop & Shop. Panera posted a sign on the window that it will move into the store, but has not filed site plans yet in Groton Town Hall.

3.  U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney and House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) will tour the Submarine Base New London and Electric Boat in Groton today. The two are expected to disuss the work being done at EB, which produced submarines ahead of schedule. Courtney sits on the House Armed Services Committee.

4.  The Chelsea Groton Foundation, a philanthropic arm of Groton-based Chelsea Groton Bank, recently gave out more than $48,500 to non-profit groups serving southeastern Connecticut and Westerly.  Agencies to recieve awards included Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut in Groton; Mystic Area Shelter & Hospitality, Inc.; Big Brother Big Sisters of Southeastern Connecticut; Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, Inc.; Women’s Center of Southeastern Connecticut, Inc.;  and American Legion Veterans Housing, Inc.

5.  Players for the Mystic Schooners, Groton's New England Collegiate Baseball League team,  arrive this week.  The team is still looking for host families to provide a home away from home for some of the 28 players from top colleges and universities.  To find out more, go to www.mysticbaseball.org.
