Five Things To Know Today

The Funeral, A Benefit And An Award

1.  Today is Friday, June 10.  It'll be partly sunny, with a chance of showers or thunderstorms this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperature will be 76 degrees, and the low will fall to 57 tonight.

2.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. today at on Groton Long Point Road, for Lt. Thomas Forbes, the 30-year veteran of the Groton City Police Department who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound this week. There will not be a procession from the funeral home. Interment will be private.

3.  A benefit will be held this weekend to help a Groton woman who ran a licensed day care in her home for many years, and is fighting her second battle with cancer. Lynn (Leger) Cousens, who graduated from Fitch High School, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer about two years ago, and the illness returned this past winter, forcing her to leave her most recent job as a teacher’s aide at Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School. The benefit will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday at Christopher’s Café on Poquonnock Road. Tickets are available for $10. For more information, call (860) 455-0464.

4.  Five students in the Biosciences and Environmental Technology shop at Grasso Technical High School have won a $1,000 prize in the 2011 Keep CT Cool competition. The students won for projects that increase recycling and energy efficiency at the school.  Larry Fritch, the head of the Biosciences and Environmental Technology department, advised the students, along with Jason White, an engineering graduate student at the University of Connecticut.

5.  Groton town police will be conducting DWI checks from 7:30 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, if you see them stopping drivers. Officers will also be checking for other violations such as using cell phones while driving or failing to wear seat belts.
