Five Things To Know Today

Home Sales, A Federal Grant Application And The Path On Thomas Road

1.  Today is Wednesday, June 15.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, with a high temperature of 73 degrees and a low of 54 tonight.

2.  Groton led New London County in home sales last month, with 22 homes sold in May, according to Randall Market Watch. Three other towns - Norwich, Stonington and Waterford - tied for second place, with 14 homes sold each.  Market Watch reported Groton homes sold at a median price of $222,750 in June and were on the market 91 days.  The report said sales volume and price rose in New London County, with the median home sale price rising from $200,00 in April to $212,000 in June.  “After experiencing slowing sales during a very harsh winter, there appears to be pent-up demand by buyers,” Doug Randall, chief executive officer of Randall Realtors said in a press release.

3.  Groton is applying for an $800,000 federal grant to hire three police officers to work on community policing and reduce overtime among others in the police department. The Town Council approved an application Tuesday for the grant through the COPS Hiring program. If approved and accepted, the grant would cover the salary and fringe benefits of three officers for three years, but obligate the town to keep those officers for the fourth year and not lay off any officers during that time.
