Five Things To Know Today

Potential Layoffs, The Summer Solstice Festival And The Ball Game

1.  Today is Tuesday, June 21.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 76 degrees, and a slight chance of showers tonight. The low will drop to 61 degrees this evening.

2.  Electric Boat has notified the town that it expects to lay off 59 people in August, Groton Town Manager Mark Oefinger told the Town Council last week.  Under state law, employers must notify the state and local community if they plan to lay off a large number of employees, but Electric Boat has made a practice of warning Groton officials before announcing any layoffs.

3.  Groton Public Library holds its free summer solstice festival at 3 p.m. today. The event includes a family craft, a performance by the Mystic Paper Beasts, and a drumming program called “Drumming About You.” Families are also invited to bring a picnic dinner to eat on the lawn from 4:45 until 5:15 p.m. while local musicians perform a concert.

4.  The Groton Town Council's committee of the whole meets tonight and will discuss a potential $2.7 million to upgrade Groton’s wastewater treatment plant. The town is eligible for Clean Water funding to upgrade the facility, but the spending must be approved before November.  The council may schedule a bond referendum Sept. 13.

5.  The Mystic Schooners play Team USA in the home opener at Fitch High baseball field at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Workers were busy preparing the field Monday. The Schooners are part of the non-profit New England Collegiate Baseball League, and the team's 28 players are staying with local families this summer.  General admission to the game is $5.
