Five Things To Know Today

Layoffs, Small Boat Day, And Sails Up 4 Cancer

1.  Today is Friday, June 24.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies,  showers and thunderstorms. The high temperature will reach 73 degrees; the low will drop to about 64 tonight.

2.  Electric Boat has notified that town that it will lay off eight employees starting August 19. All of the employees, which include millers and machinists, are represented by the Metal Trades Council.  The company sent a letter earlier this month saying it expected to lay off 59 people in August.

3.  The Groton Parks and Recreation Department and the Boating Safety Advisory Board will sponsor Small Boat Day, a free event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday at Esker Point Beach. Bring the kids. You can try out a kayak, sailboat or paddleboard, watch safety demonstrations and get more information about water sports and recreation programs in town.

4.  The Sails up 4 Cancer regatta, a new charity event to support cancer research and education, is Sunday at the Mystic River Yacht Club. The event includes a traditional race, a picnic fleet for cancer patients and their families, and an expo on alternative medicine.  Admission to the picnic fleet is $10; contact Bob Davis at Rdavis@su4c.org. 5.  Two players from The Mystic Schooners have been chosen to play with The New England Collegiate Baseball League Team in a game against Team USA on June 27 at Fenway Park in Boston.  Mystic player Joe Hudson, from the University of Notre Dame, will be a catcher and Gabe Ortiz, from Virginia Tech University, will play in the outfield.
