Five Things To Know Today

Restaurants Cited, Lois Geary And National Night Out

1.  Today is Monday, August 1. The National Weather Service forecasts partly sunny skies, a high temperature of 83 degrees and a low of 65 tonight. There's a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.

2. Three Groton stores and three restaurants were cited for selling alcohol to underaged youth during a compliance check on July 28, according to a news release from the Department of Consumer Protection. The stores and restaurants allegedly sold to volunteer youth recruited through a partnership of the police department and liquor control division. The three stores cited were Stop and Shop on Route 12, Jo’s Convenient Mart on Gold Star Highway and Mini Mart Food Store on Route 12. The three bars or restaurants cited were Voodoo Grill on Water Street, and Sneekers Café and Richoni’s Lounge on Poquonnock Road, the news release said.

3.  Conservation Commission member Lois Geary, who was first appointed in 1972, has resigned. Geary served from 1972 until 1978 when she moved out of Connecticut, then was re-appointed in 1992. She helped draft Groton's first Inland, Wetlands and Watercourses regulations and helped organize the town's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.

4.  National Night Out, an event to promote public safety, will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Poquonnock Plains Park. The event will include police K9 demonstrations and a bicycle rodeo. The department of animal control, local fire departments, U.S. Navy and Lifestar are also expected to attend.

5. The Groton Public Library offers Monday Movies for Teens at 2 p.m. today. It's free, and young people can bring their friends and pick out a PG movie to watch on the big screen.
