Five Things To Know Today

Electric Boat, The Rotary Club And Groton City Day

1.  Today is Thursday, Aug. 4. The National Weather Service predicts rain, then mostly cloudy skies and a high temperature of 75 degrees. The low will drop to 61 tonight.

2.  General Dynamics has received a $41 million Navy contract that includes having Electric Boat develop the common missile compartment for the next-generation submarine, according to a report by Metro Business Media. The contract involved two changes, including one to replace the Ohio submarine, the report said.

3. The Groton Rotary Club named Lian Obrey its new president for 2011-2012 at a special meeting at the Shennecossett Yacht Club. The group also named these officers: Lea Doran as president-elect, John Scott as vice president, Jane Giulini as secretary and Hope Toelken as treasurer. The Board of Directors includes the group's officers and these members: Bruno Giulini, Diane Thomas, Nolan Nixon, Cathy Lathrop, Mike Riegel, Frank Winkler, John Silsby and immediate past president R. B. Kent.

4.  Groton celebrates its 27th Annual Groton City Day at 5 p.m. on Friday at Washington Park. The event includes music, food, face painting, a moonwalk, train ride, ball pit and laser tag for the kids, as well as a city business expo. The Community Service Award will be presented at 7 p.m.

5.  The USS Mississippi, which is being built at Electric Boat, will be  commissioned at Gulfport Harbor in May 2012, the Sun Herald quoted Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel as saying. The newspaper said the mayor announced the commission during a business meeting.
