Five Things To Know Today

A High School Reunion, The Upcoming Election And Safe Boating

1.  Today is Friday, Aug. 5.  The National Weather Service predicts fog in the morning, then partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 75 degrees. The low will drop to 63 tonight.

2.  Groton celebrates its 27th Annual Groton City Day at 5 p.m. today at Washington Park. The event includes music, food, face painting, a moonwalk, train ride, ball pit and laser tag for the kids, as well as a city business expo. The Community Service Award will be presented at 7 p.m.

3.  Fitch High School is holding a combined class reunion for the classes of 1970 and 1971 from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville. For more information, e-mail fitch7071@gmail.com.

4.  Just as a reminder, the special election for judge of probate is Aug. 16. Democrat Nicholas Kepple and Republican Eric Janney are running, and polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Groton votes, along with Stonington, North Stonington and Ledyard.  If you can't vote in person, you can ask for an absentee ballot at the town clerk's office. 

5.  The Department of Energy And Environmental Protection has sent out a reminder to be safe in the water and while boating. Three-quarters of boating deaths in Connecticut happened when someone fell out of a boat, so wearing a life vest is crucial, the department said. Children under age 13 are also required by law to wear a vest.
