Five Things To Know Today

The Emergency Operations Center, The Marine Science Magnet School, A Busy Month At Groton Library

1.  Today is Tuesday, Aug. 16.  The National Weather Service predicts rain, on and off, for most of the day, then cloudy skies and a high temperature of 74 degrees. Tonight will be clear, with a low of 62.

2. Groton's Emergency Operations Center helped 27 people during a power outage at Avery Heights Senior Housing earlier this month, according to a report by the town manager. Emergency operations contacted the Groton Senior Center after the housing lost power on Aug. 1, and the senior center picked up residents and brought them back to the center, so they could stay cool and have lunch until power was restored.

3.  The Marine Science Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut will hold its line cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 at the school on Shennecossett Road. The school, which will open at the former Eastern Point School, will offer traditional high school classes as well as marine activities as part of its instruction.

4.  Groton Public Library had a busy July, with 80 preschool children taking part in the Read-To-Me program, 107 elementary children participating in the One World, Many Stories Reading Game, and 15 teenagers stopping in for "You Are Here" reading.  The Library offered a total of 45 programs of various kind last month.

5.  The band Rock 'n' Soul Revue, which plays Motown rock, will perform at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Washington Park as part of the city's Concerts in the Park series. The event is free, and City of Groton Little League sells food and drinks as a fundraiser. For more information or to check on possible cancellations due to weather, call (860) 446-4129.
