Five Things To Know Today

A Golf Championship, An Ice Cream Shop And Help For Veterans

1.  Today is Friday, Aug. 19. The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, a chance of rain or thunderstorms and a high temperature of 78 degrees. The temperature will drop to 64 tonight.

2.  The Connecticut PGA Professional Championship, which will include 48 golfers and five past champions, will be held Monday and Tuesday at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton. The course has been the site of the Connecticut Senior Open for 14 years.

3. Groton Town Police will have sobriety check points set up at various locations on Saturday. The effort, called "Drive Sober, or Get Pulled Over," is an attempt to deal with the major causes of injury-producing accidents, like drunk driving and speeding. Police will also be checking to make sure motorists are wearing seat belts.

5.  If you know a veteran who needs help, the Connecticut Department of Labor will hold a one-day outreach event on Sept. 9 for veterans who are homelessness, unemployed or have medical problems. The event, called "Stand Down 2011" is scheduled from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. It's some distance away at the State Veterans Home on West Street in Rocky Hill, but more than 50 government and private agencies will be there to offer help with social services benefits, medical screenings, housing and VA benefit assistance.
