Five Things To Know Today

A Swearing-In Ceremony, A Television Show and Dinner On Mondays

1.  Today is Monday, Aug. 22. The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies this morning and a chance of rain, then gradual clearing. The high temperature will reach 81 degrees; the low will dip to 56 tonight.

2.  Newly-elected probate judge Nicholas Kepple, who won the special election Aug. 16 in Groton, Ledyard, North Stonington and Stonington, will be sworn in at 10 a.m. today at the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill will administer the oath of office. The special election was held after longtime judge Frederick Palm died in March; Palm served as a probate judge in the Groton district for 24 years, and was elected six times.

3.  Groton holds its Family Safety Day Picnic from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Washington Park. The event is free, and includes a moon bounce, storytelling, children’s activities, information about the Groton City Police Department and demonstrations about fire safety.

4.  The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce’s will air its public access television show “Mystic Matters” at 8 p.m. today on Channel 12. David Preka, who owns Advanced Improvements LLC, a contractor that handles construction projects, will be the guest on the show.

5.  Faith Lutheran Church provides F.A.M.I.L.Y. Kitchen dinners every Monday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., if you need the extra meal and are struggling in this economy. The chuch is located at 625 Poquonnock Road in Groton.
