Five Things To Know Today, Oct. 10

Absentee Ballots, Remco and Mystic Seaport

1.  Today is Monday, Oct. 10, Columbus Day. Schools and town offices are closed in observance of the holiday.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 75 degrees and a low of 58 tonight.

2. Absentee ballots are available now for the upcoming municipal election on Nov. 8. In Groton, 17 people are running for 9 seats on the Town Council, and 7 people are running for 5 seats on the Board of Education. Forty-one seats on Representative Town Meeting are also up for re-election. To get an absentee ballot, you may download an application from the Secretary of the State’s at www.sots.ct.gov, or contact the town clerk at (860) 441-6640 to pick up an application in person or have one mailed to you.

3.  Remco, a new police dog, starts training this month with Officer Rich Savino of the Groton Town Police. Another police dog, Koa, retired this past spring, according to a report by the town manager. Remco's training will be provided locally and will at no cost to the department.

4.  The Groton Town Council will discuss labor negotiations in executive session this week. Town staff and Groton's lawyer are in negotiations with a number of unions, and the council will be briefed on a tentative agreement between the Board of Education and the Groton Schools Custodian and Maintenence Association.

5.  Mystic Seaport will hold a week-long series of events starting with a free fireworks display at 9 p.m. on Oct. 28 over the Mystic River to honor the 70th annivesary of the whaleship Charles W. Moran's arrival in 1841. The aquarium will offer free admission on Saturday, Nov. 5 and a series of Morgan-related activities to end the celebration. Events during the week include an antique car show, lantern lighting along the river, and talks about history.
