Five Things To Know Today, Oct. 12

Northeast Academy, Representative Town Meeting, And Watching For Moose

1.  Today is Wednesday, Oct. 12.  The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, rain after 4 p.m. and a high temperature of 63 degrees. Rain will continue tonight, and the low will drop to 59.

2.  Superintendent Paul Kadri said he’s involved in discussions to bring extra assistants to Northeast Academy, where some class sizes are larger than the recommended ratio of 25 to 1. Kadri said no new students registered this week, so enrollment appears to be stable. He said the solution is to add a fourth language arts teacher or move students to S. B. Butler Elementary. “The one thing we can’t do is create another class because there is no room,” he said. “There’s just no way to pull that off.”

3.  Representative Town Meeting meets at 7:30 p.m. today in the Groton Senior Center. Topics on the agenda include Member Jean-Claude Ambroise’s request to review the wages, benefits and pensions of non-union, board of education employees.

Late October is the start of the season for deer.  About 7,500 deer died in collisions with vehicles last year, the department said. Twenty-four accidents involving moose were reported between 1995 and 2010, the department said.

5.  Ron's Guitars on Long Hill Road is having a student showcase at 6:30 p.m. today. If you want to check out what the students are learning, the event is free and open to the public.
