Five Things To Know Today, Oct. 13

Flu Shots, Haunted Hayrides And A Disaster Loan Outreach Center

1.  Today is Thursday, Oct. 13.  The National Weather Service predicts rain and a high temperature of 69 degrees. Tonight will be cloudy, with a chance of showers and a low of 59.

2.  If you haven't had a flu shot yet, Ledge Light Health District is holding a vaccination clinic from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today in the Groton Municipal Building at 295 Meridian Street.  Anyone can stop in. Children must be at least 6 months old to receive a flu vaccine. The clinic takes Anthem Blue Cross and Medicare Part B.

3.  Groton's ROL Haven Farms and the Oakdale Fire Department are offering horse-drawn, haunted hayrides from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the fire department at 444 Chapel Hill Road in Oakdale. The rides are mellow for the first hour, so if you have young children, that's the time to go. After that, expect to be scared. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-12. Kids 3 and under are free.

4.  If you suffered damage during Tropical Storm Irene and haven't made it to a Disaster Loan Outreach Center, you still have time. The center in East Haven, which was scheduled to close today, will stay open until Oct. 27, the governor's office said.  The first step is to register with FEMA online at www.disasterassistance.gov, or by phone at 1-800-621-FEMA. The Center in East Haven is at East Haven Town Beach at 160 Cosey Beach Road.

5.  The 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Breakfast, which recognizes the different military branches, will be held from 7:45 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Oct. 21 at the Groton Inn & Suites. Speakers will include Rear Adm. Breckenridge, Commander of Submarine Group Two at the sub base in Groton, and Rear Adm. Stosz of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
