Five Things To Know Today, Oct. 24

The Board of Education, Holiday Help And Amtrak

1.  Today is Monday, Oct. 24.  The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, a high temperature of 61 degrees and scattered showers tonight. The low will fall to 48 tonight.

2.  The Groton Board of Education meets at 5:30 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex and will vote on whether to close one of Groton's middle schools. The vote will be on whether to have two or three middle schools in town. The board will vote at a later date on which school, if any, to close.

3.  Groton Human Services will hold sign ups from Nov. 1 until Dec. 2 for Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets and toys.  Families applying for help must verify their income by providing four weeks of pay stubs, state assistance, child support, unemployment and other income. Toys will be given to children up to age 12. Older children, ages 13 to 15, will receive gift cards if they are available. Children must live at home and attend Groton Public Schools.

4.  Amtrak trains between New York and Boston will be canceled on Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6 to accommodate the harbor bridge replacement project in Stonington. The $22.1 million project begins at 4 p.m. on Nov. 5 and ends the following day at noon. If you must travel then, bus service between New York and Boston is available through companies including Greyhound at 1-800-231-2222 and Peter Pan at 1-800-343-9999.

5.  The New England Spiritual Team is offering a free presentation tonight on paranormal activities, if you want to get in the Halloween spirit. The event is at 7 p.m. in Bill Memorial Library.
