Five Things To Know Today, Oct. 28

Middle School Consolidation, A New Police Chief And A Harvest Art Show

1.  Today is Friday, Oct. 28.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 49 degrees. The low will fall to 33 tonight.

2.  The Groton Board of Education will hold three public forums to solicit community input on consolidating the three middle schools. Information gathered at the forums will be used to create a survey, which will be sent to parents and made available townwide. The board will consider data from the survey as well as the forums when making a decision. The first forum will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 at Fitch Middle School.

3.  Acting Chief Michael J. Crowley will be sworn in as the new chief of Groton Town Police during a ceremony at 3 p.m. at the Groton Senior Center.  Captain Steven Smith will be sworn in as deputy chief.  Crowley has been with the police department since May 1985.

4.  The Noank Foundry holds its Harvest Art Show from noon until 6 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to the foundry artists, a masseuse, local author and herbalist will attend, and the show will include a jack-o-lantern display at sundown. Oversized mums and pumpkins will be availabe for sale.

5.  Galaxy Roller Rink on Bridge Street in Groton is holding Halloween Weekend this weekend. If you wear a costume, you get $1 off admission today through Sunday.  The Monster Kids' Party, which includes skating and a candy grab, is at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
