The Middle School Schedule, An Honor For The Subbase And FEMA

1. Today is Monday, Oct. 3. The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies with showers likely this afternoon, and a high temperature of 64 degrees. The low will drop to 52 tonight. 2. Students are still adjusting to the new middle school schedule, started this year. The schedule is run on a six-day rotation, and each day has seven classes of 52 minutes each, with 30 minutes for lunch. Core subjects such as math, langauge arts, science and social studies are taught during the four periods before lunch. School officials said the change was needed to provide more services to students without increasing costs, and prepare for consolidation. 3. Groton's Naval Submarine Base New London was recently honored as winner of the Navy region mid-Atlantic's annual commander Award for Installation Excellence, according to a news release. The award recognizes outstanding efforts of personnel who operate and maintain U.S. military installations worldwide. The Groton base will represent the mid Atlantic region as one of 12 regional winners who will compete for the Navy’s top honor. 4. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will have a table set up from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at Johnson's Hardware on Fort Hill Road. The agency will provide information on protecting your home from future flood damage. 5. The Noank Volunteer Fire Company will hold an open house from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., rain or shine, on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the fire house on Ward Avenue. The department will have at least three apparatus on display, including two pump engines, and will serve hot dogs and hamburgers. The event is open to the public.
