Five Things To Know Today, Sept. 13

The Mystic Education Center, The Mystic Streetscape Project And A Collection For The Homeless

1.  Today is Tuesday, Sept. 13.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 76 degrees and a low of 63 tonight.

2.  The Groton Town Council meets at 7:30 p.m. today, and is expected to receive a briefing from Town Manager Mark Oefinger on the town's response to Tropical Storm Irene. Other agenda items include the status of the Mystic Education Center, which the state is closing to save money. One the property is assessed, the town has the right of first refusal on whether it wants it.

3.  Work will continue in the next two weeks on the Mystic Streetscape project on West Main Street between Gravel and Pearl streets, according to a report by the town manager. About 100 feet of granite curbing will be installed, along with the sidewalk.

4.  The Groton Department of Human Services is seeking donations of hats, gloves, socks and toiletries to help homeless residents in town. Items can be dropped off at the human services office at 2 Fort Hill Road, and will be distributed on Oct. 21 at the sixth annual Southeastern CT Project Homeless Connect.

5.  The deadline for registering at Groton's Sixth Fall Festival is Sept. 23, so if you'd like to a have a spot at the event, visit the Groton Business Association website at grotonbiz.com or call the chamber at (860) 572-9578. The festival is held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Oct. 8 at Poquonnock Plains Park.
