Thames Street, Fall Recreation Programs And A Group Helping Military Families

1.  Today is Thursday, Sept 15.  The National Weather Service predicts  a chance of rain before 3 p.m., then showers or thunderstorms this afternoon. Rain may continue this evening, with skies gradually clearing. The high temperature will reach 73 degrees, then fall to a low of 44 tonight.

2.  Work on the retaining walls along Thames Street will begin on Monday, Sept. 19, City Mayor Marian Galbraith said in a statement Wednesday. Businesses will remain open during the work, which will take about 90 days, she said. The Newport, R.I. firm of Hugo Key and Son Inc, is the contractor for the $641,164 project.

3.  As of Wednesday, just under 1,000 people had registered for Groton's fall recreation programs compared to a final number of 2,500 last fall, said Jerry Lokken, manager of recreation services. About 200 people had registered for aquatics classes compared to 540 last year.  Lokken said the department has only cancelled a couple of classes due to low enrollment so far, but decisions on others will be made this weekend. "People can still come in and register, but they need to do it quickly to be sure they don’t miss out," he said.

4.  A local partnership aimed at improving the lives of children in military families will be recognized by the state on Friday. The Southeastern Connecticut’s Military Superintendents Liaison Committee, which includes local school Superintendents and military leaders at Naval Submarine Base New London and the U.S. Coast Guard earned an exemplary partnership award in June at the 13th Annual Conference of The Military Child Education Coalition in Nashville, Tenn. The state is honoring the group, U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard for earning the national award.

5.  Jonathan Heller was elected to Representative Town Meeting Wednesday by a caucus of members of the seventh district, which covers part of Mystic. Heller fills the vacancy created after Peter Fairbank left this summer.
