Five Things to Know Today, Sept. 26

The Surplus Property Auction, Business Workshops And Free Programs At The Groton Senior Center.

1.  Today is Monday, Sept. 26.  The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, a high temperature near 76 degrees and showers this afternoon. The low will dip down to 60 tonight.

2.  The town made about $12,000 from its auction of surplus property last week, according to a report by the town manager.  More than 100 people registered for the auction, and bought $15,565 worth of property, with the bulk of the money coming from the sale of a Ford Explorer, Toro mowers and two other peices of equipment, the report said.

3.  The first two in a series of small business workshops were well attended earlier this month, the report said. Seventeen and 30 people showed up for the first two classes, on starting your own business in Connecticut. The final workshop is a two-part class on writing a business plan, including a market analysis and budget. Classes are run by the Small Business Development Center at Three Rivers Community Colllege and held at Groton Public Library.

4.  The Groton Senior Center is holding a series of free programs in the coming weeks on money management and health care. The programs run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, and the first  scheduled for this week is called "Empowerment, How to Stay in Charge of Your Money." Registration is not necessary, but you may sign up if you like by calling (860) 441-6785.

5.  The Women's Center of Southeastern Connecticut holds its Annual Meeting and Recognition Breakfast from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6 at Groton Inn & Suites. To attend, call (860) 447-0366, ext. 203.
