Five Things To Know Today, Sept. 27

The Town Council, Local Authors And The Mystic Streetscape Project

1.  Today is Tuesday, Sept. 27.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 74 degrees and a slight chance of showers this afternoon. The low will drop to 60 tonight.

2.  The Groton Town Council's Committee of The Whole meets at 7 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex. Topics include the status of the Mystic Education Center and a memorial to John J. Kelley, the Boston Marathon winner who died Aug. 21. The council is also expected to discuss the job performance of Town Manager Mark Oefinger.

3.  Several local authors will discuss their books and sign copies during an event called "Author! Author" from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Groton Senior Center. Local authors include Town Mayor and historian Jim Streeter and Lisa Saunders, who wrote a book compiling letters exchanged between her great grandparents during the Civil War. 4.  The Mystic Streetscape project is continuing now that the busy part of summer is over. Work so far has been done on Gravel Street, Pearl Street and the north side of West Main Street, except for installing pavers, according to the latest update on the project. The contractor has the granite pavers at the site and is expected to put them in during the coming weeks. CL&P and AT&T are also installing new utility polls in the area.

5.  The non-profit group Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities, Inc., has received a three-year grant from Groton to evaluate and inspect the homes that participate in a town rehabilitation program that provides low-income homeowners with non-interest, deferred loans for improvements like correcting building code violations. An estimated 15 homes will be renovated through the program, according to the ECHO newsletter.
