Five Things To Know Today, Sept. 6

The Groton Town Council, Rental Rebates And A Start-Up Company

1.  Today is Tuesday, Sept. 6, and the first day of school for Groton Public School students. The National Weather Service predicts rain, which at times could be heavy, and a high temperature of 68 degrees. The low will drop to 60 tonight.

2.  The Groton Town Council meets at 7:30 p.m. today. Topics include a resolution to accept a $9,000 grant and enter into an agreement with Thames Valley Council for Community Action, Inc. to provide supportive housing services in Groton to homeless residents from Feb. 1 until Jan. 31, 2012.

3. From mid May through mid September, Groton Human Services received 542 applications for the tax rebate program for renters who are elderly and disabled, according to a report by the town manager. If all applications go through at the state level, the rebates would total $255,192 in Groton, or an average of $471 per renter, the report said.

4.  A new Groton company called Arcanatura, LLC, a green, animal healthcare product business is one of three startup companies to receive a total of $450,000 from Connecticut Innovations, a quasi-public agency that assists new companies. Arcanatura and the other businesses have obtained matching funds from private investors, according to a news release.

5.  A group of sailors from the USS Virginia submarine took part in stitching the national memorial flag that will be brought to New York City for the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11, the Department of the Navy said in a news release. The sailors worked on the flag when it was in Portsmouth, N.H., the town that hosts the submarine.
