Farmers' Market Is Today, Kindergarten Meet-And-Greet With Popsicles, Emergency Telecom Upgrade

1.  Today is Wednesday, Aug. 24. Today's weather will be sunny with a high temperature around 77 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight will be partly cloudy and temperatures will dip to 65 degrees.

2. The Groton farmers' market is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today in the Groton Shopping Plaza. The fall crops are beginning to arrive and the summer crops have not died down so you won't be disappointed by the selection and variety at markets from not through September.

3. Tonight from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., incoming kindergarten students and parents are invited the to meet their new teachers and classmates at an event called "Popsicles on the Playground."

4. The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce needs volunteers for the Taste of Mystic, which is on Sept. 9, 10 and 11. The chamber is seeking volunteers for "all aspects of the Taste from ticket sales to bartending" and promises the weekend will be filled with great food, entertainment and fun. Contact Alexa Shelton at 860-572-9578 or email her at alexa@mysticchamber.org to volunteer.

5. The town council approved a request Tuesday night to apply for a matching grant of $20,372 to purchase a new voice recorder for the emergency dispatch center. Office of Emergency Management Joseph Sastre said the maintenance costs for the current equipment is "going up and up and up" due to its age and the parts are becoming harder to find.

The digital equipment Sastre wants to buy will be able to record digital and analog phone calls as soon as the caller dials the number, whereas the current recording equipment doesn't start recording until the dispatch center answers the call.

The grant funds will be paid for by the Office of Statewide Emergency Telecommunications and, according to Sastre, the town's contribution had already been budgeted for the purchase.
