Friends of Groton Patch facebook have strong feelings about a proposal to ban smoking in cars with children age 6 and under.

The bill, A story on the proposal, posted on Groton Patch Monday morning had 24 comments on facebook by 8 p.m., with many voicing strong views.

Norman Malbaurn wrote he hopes the proposal passes.

“My parents use to smoke when I was a kid. I used to get so nauseous when they smoked in the car and I had no say in it,” he wrote.

Becky Barton wrote the proposal doesn’t go far enough.

“Ban it with any kid in the car. It's disgusting & children shouldn't be subjected to it!” she said.

Other said the government shouldn’t regulate what people do in private.

“They shouldn’t be able to pass that law because when you are in your car its private property not public space,” wrote Holly Webster.

Robin Walsh Mallove said obesity is a bigger risk than second-hand smoke.

“Let's arrest mom's coming out of the drive-thru at McDonalds, and those who let their children under six drink soda,” she said.

“Can we say..."Nanny State"... Give me a break...” wrote Christine Blanchette Fine. “Those cars are more dangerous than guns maybe you need a background check before allowing the purchase of one!”

Unfortunately, people that smoke do not realize how disgusting they smell and how irresponsible it is for them to smoke anywhere it might affect our children or anyone else. It is a very self serving habit. I do not think that a law put in place such as suggested will do much since a car is someone's extension of home. Will we regulate the in house smoking too? It is unfortunate, but I do not see it as anything but imposing a personal health preference onto the general population on and in their personal space. It can't be done because of that one issue--much like obesity really cannot be regulated unless we were to ban all fast foods and fried foods from the market! Not a bad idea but it sure wouldn't fly with many people who's pallets are craving the nasty stuff.

I don't understand why the proposal only applies to 6 year olds and younger. Why not protect all kids? What about the 7 to 18 year olds? Don't they matter. In my opinion the law should ban smoking if there are any passengers regardless of there age.

Umm? Yes, smoking is disgusting. What's more disgusting is that this is even made to be a Government issue. Ahh...how about focusing on fixing CT's budget, and bringing jobs back to CT.
