Groton Middle School Redistricting Should Be Completed In February

Discussions Also Begun With Union Leadership About Process For Moving Staff

Students should know by the end of February what middle school they will be attending next year, Superintendent Paul Kadri said Monday.

Kadri told the Board of Education that architects are looking at a computerized map of town property and student data to determine how to assign students to Groton's middle school students. The goal is to preserve neighborhoods and keeps an equal number of students in each of the buildings, he said.

The district also has a racial imbalance at Catherine Kolnaski Elementary, which it will try to correct, Kadri said.

Kadri said he expects to receive an initial report in early February, and have enough clarity about the bus schedules and other issues . The school department is also in initial discussion with leaders of the various bargaining units to talk about how the district will manage staff movements.

The past several weeks have focused on looking at the physical buildings at West Side and Cutler, confirming square footage and looking at schedules, Kadri said.

“We feel pretty good about West Side and we’re almost finished with Cutler, from a sense of how many portables we would need and the type of work staff would need to do,” he said. The plan is to keep renovations minimal, anticipating that the buildings will be renovated more thoroughly in the future.
